"Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet."

A few years ago we had a tradition that at the end of the work week we would sit in a circle and speak through a translator to each of the Honduran workers and family members that we served.  After seeing many of the workers mix cement (mezcla) barefooted or in sandals we often would give them our boots at the end of the week.  A few years ago, our brother Wiley Jones said to Steve Brown, "We are giving them our boots.  What we should be doing is washing their feet."  And so a new tradition began...

John 13:1-17New International Version (NIV)

Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

13 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
“No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”
Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
“Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”
10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Almost heaven

The definition of "almost heaven": Bob playing guitar with the kids under a Honduras shade tree.

Floor is laid on work day #4 (Friday)

Tom and Keith work with Pastor Carlos to lay the concrete floor.

Suzanne is a hit with the kids

Needless to say, Suzanne is a star with the kids.  She led them in coloring, Frisbee, jump rope, and the fun never stopped.

La Playa (beach)

After work day #3 we stopped by the Cedano beach.  Suzanne enjoyed putting her toes in the Pacific Ocean and we all enjoyed the cool breeze and breathtaking view of El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua on the horizon.

It's beginning to feel like home

End of work day #3 and all the block walls are laid.  12 courses high, with two windows and two doors, plus the gables. Tomorrow we start on the roof and floor.

Mike stands here with two children, Brian and Yorleni, with the greeting: Bienvenida a su hogar, (Welcome to your home).

Walls going up on Work Day #2

Keith and Dennis on the wall.

Mike, Joel, and Anthony on Work Day #1

Mike and Joel had responsibility for the street front wall.  Anthony is the nephew of the family for whom we are building the house this week and he has worked hard all week mixing mezcla (cement).

Dennis and Jim on the wall

Work day #1.

Frisbie time on "work" day #3.

Another game of Frisbee.  This time it was the 'monkey in the middle' version.  Fewer occurrences of Frisbees on the roof.  Tom didn't want to have to lift up Budd on his shoulders again.

The Block Master - Steve (Esteban)

Steve, assisted by Budd, kept us moving with the block saw.  We finished all the block work on work day #3.

Tom gets us started laying Course #11 (channel block) as we put up the scaffolding at the start of work day #3.

Tortillas and fish for lunch

Eddy Amelia and a friend started cooking tortillas first thing in the morning and prepared a delicious fried fish lunch for us today.

Jim, Bob, Budd, Suzanne, and Dennis playing Frisbie with the kids

The kids were a little quicker getting to the Frisbie than the adults and we only had to retrieve it from the roof 2 or 3 times.

Mike and Keith on Work Day #2

Mike handled the street front wall and Keith worked on the north wall on Day 2.  After the first 5 courses laid yesterday, we finished rows 6-8 by lunch time on day 2, then completed row 10 before breaking around 2:00 PM.  We are making great progress on the house, enjoying getting to know the family, and spending quality time with the kids in the neighborhood.

The work day begins

Boots are lined up against the wall awaiting the start of the next work day.

Devotion singing - Day 2

Have you ever seen joy in someone's face while singing about their savior?  Let me introduce you to Bob Kimball.

The family: Jose Raphael, Arminda, Sirly, Stacy, and Eddy

The father, Jose Raphael, came later in the afternoon, but this photo shows Arminda (mother), Eddy (grandmother), Sirly, and Stacy.

Foundations at the beach (Cedano) have a little extra elevation.

In this case it is only about 10 extra inches, but the site was ready when we arrived with all the block stacked neatly in the middle, a pulperia next door, and shade in the back yard.

Travel day and first devotion

We arrived safely in Choluteca after a long day of flights through Atlanta into Tegucigalpa, then the long winding drive down the mountain into Choluteca.  There is a noticeable increase in industrial activity along the highway with new construction sites, warehouses, excavation, and warehouse/distribution facilities.  The water level in the Choluteca river is low as always this time of year but the bridge was still a welcome site letting us know we arrived.  Actually seeing Mike, Ginger, Jose, and Orphilio were the true sings that we had arrived.

You will all be happy to know that Bob's guitar arrived safely and that the biggest scare we had was Suzanne's luggage being lost for about 15 minutes.  She was as calm as could be, so along with Jim, our two rookie's are now veterans after day one.  Jose's esposa prepared a wonderful dinner for which we are very grateful.  Next up, Rosa.

Steve lead the devotion tonight, along with insightful comments and prayers by Joel, Budd, and BobO.  Those that have been here before know that our evening devotions are one of the highlights of the trip so you can only imagine how blessed we are to start off the week this way.

Dios te bendega.

Departing from ATL to Tegucigalpa. We now have our full complement of 10 people, with Mike Satterfield joining us here in Atlanta.

Honduras 2016 Team

Our trip dates are Jan 25 - Feb 2, 2016, and team members are:

        Steve Brown (Team Leader)
Bob Kimball (Founder, TL Emeritus, Music Chair, construction supervisor)
        Dennis Ellis
        Keith Lewis
        Tom Childrey
        Joel Brown
        Mike Satterfield
        Budd Hipp
        Suzanne Sanford (rookie)
        Jim Adorney (rookie)

First leg of trip has begun

Our two new members have already kicked off the first leg of our journey on Sunday.  Jim Adorney flew from Boston to Raleigh and Suzanne Sanford travelled from Garner to Raleigh to get closer to the airport and minimize the black ice hazard from our recent snow/ice storm.  Vamos con Dios.

Commissioning Devotion

Two days of snow and ice caused us to have cancel the regular Sunday morning worship service at FBC Raleigh.  God has a way of leading us around these challenges...

From Budd Hipp:
Thought this was a perfect commissioning from the Lord for our group as I opened my devotional from Experiencing God Day By Day. Let us truly discover more of him than we could ever ask!

Planning Meeting/Meal before we depart

Steve Brown (and Regina) hosted a wonderful planning meeting and dinner as we prepare to depart to Honduras on Jan 25th, 2016.  Our new team members Suzanne Sanford and Jim Adorney (by phone) got a good introduction to what 9 days with Bob Kimball will be like.

This is Bob, trying to be "hip".
